Soca’s status as the forgotten music of the Caribbean is about to change as a new showcase gives it the recognition it deserves.

The first annual Soca Music Awards will take place on Friday 17 October 2008 at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury, London WC1N 1HT.

Infectious
At carnival time, soca is the infectious dance music that moves millions on the streets of Notting Hill and at festivals worldwide. But for the rest of the year, it’s fair to say that soca has a much lower profile. These new Awards should change all that.

Developed in Trinidad in the 1970s by adding new rhythms to calypso, soca has come a long way and today boasts many world-class artistes. In the UK it can be heard year-round in clubs and on Choice 96.9FM and 101.7FM, BBC 1Xtra and community radio stations such as lynxradio.net, socafm.co.uk, temporadio.co.uk and vibesfm.com. A dedicated band of DJs keeps the music’s lively, fashion-conscious followers abreast with the latest sounds from around the soca globe. And calypso – the original music of the Caribbean – is enjoying a revival too, thanks to a wave of new talent.

It’s not always been an easy ride for Britain’s soca-lovers, though. That’s why Soca News – the UK’s pioneering magazine of Caribbean music and culture – decided it was time to celebrate all those who have made significant contributions to the music.

Salute
The 2008 Soca Music Awards will honour the hard-working producers, writers, arrangers and performers of soca and calypso. It’s going to be a long-overdue chance for everyone who loves the music to salute its great achievers, from the pioneers to up-and-coming artistes.

Hosted by Martin Jay of Choice FM and Alex Jordan of the BBC 1Xtra soca show, the Awards will feature a host of celebrities and supporters of Caribbean music, art and culture. And there will be live performances by UK and international soca artistes.

The organisation behind the awards, Soca News, is a Caribbean music and culture brand that can be found online at socanews.com and in print via Soca News Magazine. It’s a one-stop source of information about communities, music events, reviews and news from home and abroad.

I think it's incredible that an event like this is fianlly taking place to honour UK Soca. A lot of these awards are focused around the international artists who have not even performed in the UK so it is inspiring to see that our home grown talent are being recognised.

It's such a shame, that considering the Soca community is so small in the UK, that prominent poisonous individuals would try to sabotage such a wonderful event!

Keep your head up, and I urge everybody to come out and support, what will be a great evening.

Firstly i must say well done to the organisers of the SMA. I am very disappointed that the nominees did not make an effort to turn up for the event. I am sure if those awards were being handed out by a different organisation, the outcome would be different. Its a shame as a nation we cannot come together and support our culture. Personally i don't think the awards should have gone to anyone who was not in attendance and that includes the international bands/artists.

In response to Nubian Princess' remark - HOW ON EARTH can a nominee attend if they were not notified of the event or invited? Do you reckon they have ESP???

Come on and we know its a fix right!!!

I agree that we West Indians whether British born or Island raised should come together in peace and harmony and rejoice in our culture.

!!!RESPECT SOCA !!!

ANYWAY WHO WON?
BLESS!

I was not aware that the nominees were not notified...in fact that makes a joke out of the awards really!!!! What is the point of it all??? That said, I don't think any of it was a fix...I made the effort to vote online and encouraged my friends to do the same. I must say that despite wanting to support this event again, I will give it a miss next year. I am sure next year's event will be a success.

Maybe the reason certain international artists couldn't attend was because the International Soca Awards took place in St. Kitts the following day.

Some of these nominees may have had a genuine reason for not attending. At the time of nomination they may have already been booked for another event.

All I have to say is well done to the organisers. I really enjoyed myself and I look forward to the next one. It's a great platform to showcase and give recognition to our British soca artists.

I heard it on AIR the Saturday morning!! HOW ON EARTH can u mistake 1 DJ for another? thats IMPOSSIBLE especially if they look nothing alike and their names are completely different? Come on smell the coffee!!!
