Over two hundred songs were heard, in two categories, during the recently held preliminary round of the annual Soca Monarch Competition.
The finals will take place on Fantastic Friday, February 1st.
Thirty two groovy soca artists and thirty one power soca artists were chosen for the International Soca Monarch semifinals, which will be held on Sunday January 20th at the Arima Velodrome.
The three times International Soca Monarch Bunji Garlin has returned to the popular competition to challenge defending monarch Iwer George.
Also in the semi-final round are Bunji’s wife, Fay Ann, and his father-in-law SuperBlue, who captured the first title sixteen years ago.
Barbadian singer/songwriter Biggie Irie (Geoffrey Cordle), who made history last February when he became the first non-T&T national to capture the title, will be defending his International Groovy Soca Monarch title on Fantastic Friday.
Now in its sixteenth year, Soca Monarch has developed itself into a staple in the carnival diary.
It is one show not to be missed, and for many upcoming artists it is the yardstick by which their music is measured.
Promoters utilise it to source artists for all the international carnivals. Be sure to see the crème de la crème of soca on Fantastic Friday.
