This week, Billboard magazine, the most prestigious mainstream music publication, has asked the question whether ‘Soca King’ Machel Montano can take Soca mainstream.

The question – ‘Soca Survivor: Can Machel Montano take the genre mainstream?’ was posed in Billboard’s current issue, cover date August 30 2008, in its first ever feature on a Soca artist, calypsonians Mighty Sparrow and David Rudder have graced the cover in the past.

Machel, currently in New York after extremely successful shows in Barbados and London, will be performing at the infamous S.O.B.'s on Thursday, August 27. Fans can then enjoy the biggest show from Trinidad Carnival which will be held in one of the most exclusive venues in Manhattan. Billed as "Alternative Concept New York" it will be held on Saturday, August 30 at Cipriani Wall Street, which has played host to other musical heavyweights including Akon, Fergie, Rihanna and also P. Diddy's über-exclusive 30th birthday bash.

In addition to his live shows, he will also host urban radio giant HOT97's Labor Day Jouvert Party featuring Elephant Man on Sunday 31 August at The Madison in Manhattan before being a special guest on HOT97's Labor Day float on Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway on Monday 1 September. Montano is currently enjoying urban market airplay airplay with his remix of Defense - The Anthem with Pitbull and Lil Jon, and its video which debuted on MTV Base and Trace-TV all across Europe. The video entered the Latin Top 20 Video Charts in the U.S. this month and stays strong this week, coming in at number 17 among all Latin videos aired in the United States.
