Six artists from the Take Over Tent, eight from NG Soca Stage, three from Ambassadors, two from Spectrum and one from South Tent make up the twenty performers who will compete against reigning St Lucia Groovy Soca Monarch Teddyson John on Wednesday 9th July, at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay.
Herb Black, Ashanti, Alpha featuring Nicole, Ricky T, Marianne, Black I, Q-pid, Mantius, Blaze, Ninja, Kerian Piper, Kakal, Slick, Yardie, Mr Brown, Dean Roberts, Lady Leen, The Mighty Taker, Sparkle, and Menell were chosen from two preliminary rounds held last week, which involved 41 participants in total.
The competitors will be judged on theme, catchiness of hookline, appropriateness of language and effectiveness of rhymes under the heading of lyrics, music, groove, arrangement, melody and performance, rendition and presentation.
The Groovy Soca Monarch competition, which began in Trinidad five years ago and has since spread to many other islands, features the more melodious side of soca music, with the tempo of the tune usually around 120-125 bpm.
