Soca artist Skhi (pronounced Sky), is taking his Desire straight to the finals of the International Groovy Soca Monarch competition on Fantastic Friday 1 February, 2008.
“It is an accomplishment which has made me feel even more driven. It is a motivation. I intend to give a heartfelt performance with a nice stage presentation,” explained Skhi during an interview with Soca News.
Born in the USA from Trinidad parents and currently living in Trinidad, the first time finalist, Dwayne Arthur has been performing for over 18 years. Over the years his talent has been showcased as a lead vocalist of Blue Ventures alongside Lima Calbio and Double D (91 – 93), a key member of the group Ataklan (93 -95), before soloing under his full name.
However it was only in the past three years, under the name Skhi has he become more widely recognized with hits like Find a way (2006), Addictive (2007) and his current hit Desire which has seen his inclusion in numerous events including a number of allinclusives.
Signed to new independent label out of Miami called Jamdong, Skhi is currently working on an album which is set to be released next year after Carnival, during Easter.
“I consider myself to be an artiste, so I don’t really consider myself to be a soca artist. It the love of music that has caused me to sing, it’s natural and God given. I do various styles even stuff with reggae influence; people will get a lot of stuff from me. They can look out for a CD which includes poetry, soca, riddims etc stuff that showcases my versatility,” explained Skhi of his upcoming album.
Currently booked for shows in Toronto, Boston, Miami after T&T Carnival, Shki hopes to be invited to London before the year is out and if his determination and dedication to the music is anything to go by we have no doubt that we will see him soon. |
