When you next touch down in the Caribbean island of Grenada, you will find yourself in a different location entirely. Instead of the Point Salines International Airport (PSIA), you will discover that you are standing in the (newly renamed) Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA).
The airport will henceforth carry the name of the former Prime Minister, who in 1979 was instrumental in the decision to proceed with the construction of a new airport – a step seen as a pre-requisite for the development of tourism in Grenada.
During the renaming ceremony, which was attended by the Prime Minister Tilman Thomas, a new departure lounge was also unveiled. The airport, which first opened in 1984, will keeps its 3-digit international airport code of GND.
Weekly flights from the UK are provided by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Monarch airlines to the island, as the airport continues to be central to the export of Grenadian agricultural products and manufactured goods, as well as providing easy access for tourists.
