Shel Shok loses cancer battle

Ace music producer Sheldon ‘ShelShok’ Benjamin succumbed to non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of cancer which attacks the lymphatic system, on Tuesday 9th June. ShelShok was at his Valsayn home under the care of his mother and close family, when he began to deteriorate, but he eventually passed away later, after having been transported to the nearby Mount Hope Hospital.

ShelShok was considered one of the region's most prolific music producers, who in the opinion of many was far ahead of his time. He entered the arena in 1992, and produced songs for most of the artists signed to the Keskidee Karavan label of the Caribbean Sound Basin. He was largely responsible for making artists such as General Grant, Kindred, Black Mayl and Homefront household names in that era. He would go on to produce hit singles for Machel Montano, 3Canal, Rocky, Bunji Garlin, Precious, Alison Hinds, Ataklan and Destra, as well as many other local, regional and a number of international acts. He is said to have produced more than 307 songs.

On Sunday 7th June, artists ShelShok had worked with in the past, as well as his colleagues in the entertainment industry, hosted the Lifeline concert at the Zen nightclub in Trinidad with the aim of helping with his medical expenses. Lifeline was held in Triniad with a similar event Life Line UK held in London. And in words from the invitation to that: “You may or may not know him but you know his music and without a doubt he has made you dance with joyful abundance … his music has influenced our lives in some way … gave us memories or made us happy”. Who could put it better?

Sheldon ‘ShelShok’ Benjamin is gone, but will not be easily forgotten. All of us at Soca News would like to extend our sincere condolences to all of his family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.
