The St.Kitts-Nevis national carnival came to an exciting end on January 4; the streets of Basseterre were flooded with revellers and mas players jamming to the sounds of various sound systems, DJ’s and bands. The air was filled with the top tunes for carnival 2006-07, which included songs by d’Vybz Band, Provoker, Sugar Band, Akshun Band and Small Axe Band; Small Axe Band’s Masquerade was declared the St Kitts Carnival Road March winner, outdistancing d’Vybz’ Tun it up, and Ras Kelly from Small Axe won Soca Monarch, also with Masquerade, the first time that one song has won this double-header.
The Phunnmakers’ Mask is Mas troupe was declared band of the year, DJ Ronnie Rascal’s Xtreme J’Ouvert Troupe was adjudged best j’ouvert troupe, while Osdel “Scotty” Hanley won King of the Bands. The National Calypso Monarch title was rife with controversy - almost a given – but eventually King Konris retained his crown with Hold on to Your Crown and Miss Melody, after edging out the National Female Calypso Queen Anastasia by just 4 points, despite her explosive double performances which hypnotised everyone present.
Tesia Burton gracefully walked away as winner of the National Queen Pageant and with the title of Ms St.Kitts 2006-07. Miss Trinidad and Tobago Zobah Samuels captured the coveted title of Miss Caribbean Talented Teen, when she beat 12 contestants from throughout the Caribbean at the prestigious pageant. The show also included spectacular performances by Jamesy P, who sung a medley of his hits, including Nookie and Pushing, and Shakki and Shakkal of d’Vybz band, who performed the band’s hit One Time Too Many.
A new addition to the carnival line-up was the St.Kitts-Nevis Top Model Competition, which was won by Joy Wilson. The Mighty Junior was the winner of the Junior Calypso Competition, and Calypso Reggie was the winner of the Best of the Rest Calypso Competition. The Panorama title went to the Cayon High School Steel Orchestra. The awards ceremony took place on January 13, and winners walked away with a total of almost a quarter of a million dollars in cash and prizes. |
