At 20, the extremely petite Shivonne Churche could easily pass for 15, so it’s no wonder she’s known as Lil Bitts. Although Churche only gained international recognition in 2004, she actually began her calypso career at the age of nine.
Lil Bitts has loads of experience under her belt, and the belt in question is a martial arts brown belt. The allure of soca proved too much, and in 2002 she succumbed: singing a Kernal Roberts composition, Spin Yuh Towel, she placed fifth in the Junior Soca Monarch competition, and has not looked back since.
Gaining momentum, in 2003 she sang another Kernal Roberts composition, Groove Mih. After graduating from Foundation Voice Training at the Brass Institute and from the Institute of Broadcasting Careers in 2004, she was ready to take on the world. This she successfully did with her own compositions, Doh Leh Go and Carnival In My Country, featuring Bunji Garlin.
2005 is already proving to be an even greater success for Lil Bitts, as her first release, Crush, written by Kernal and featuring Sean Caruth of Traffik, is already on heavy rotation. Esta Fiesta, her song on the Christmas Riddim which also features a number of top artists including Denise Belfon, Ghetto Flex and H2O Phlo, has been receiving great airplay both on the radio and on Synergy TV (the MTV of T&T).
Bump, her Road March and Soca Monarch contender which was also written by Kernal, was released recently (December 10), and is expected to ensure that Lil Bitts’ name stays on the lips of partygoers throughout the 2005 carnival. |
