The race is on to decide the winners of the International Soca Awards 2012. Online voting in 29 categories, showcasing nominees from the Caribbean, Europe, North America and Africa, began on 4 May and will close on 27 June. Of special note is the inclusion of a Nigerian Soca Song of the Year category which shows the extensive reach of the genre.
Machel Montano and Kerwin Du Bois lead the way with seven nominations each, including Song of the Year and Best Collaboration, for which Du Bois has two entries in each, and Best Groovy Soca (Male). Hot on their heels is Edwin Yearwood with five nominations and Kes the Band with four nods. Husband and wife team Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons each have three nominations, as does soloist Destra Garcia.
In the Chutney music categories, singer Rick Ramoutar is in a strong position having secured nominations for Soca Chutney Artiste of the Year (Male), Song of the Year and Best Music Video. UK duo Muzik Lil Muzik have had their hard work recognised with a nomination for Soca Duo/Group of the Year.
This year, ISA goes to Hollywood, USA, where it will be the premier event to mark the first Los Angeles Cultural Festival and the start of celebrations in LA of Trinidad & Tobago’s 50th anniversary of independence.
