Beverley Sookermany seems to be in a hurry. At age 25, this model, dancer and singer/songwriter has launched her myriad talents at the unsuspecting world, all at once. That she is multi-talented - with an emphasis on music - is no surprise; she was born in Trinidad, and grew up soaking up the full range of musical genres that all Trinis are exposed to, just because they happen to live there. At age five, the seedlings of musical passion firmly took root, sprouting an ambition to make it in the music industry. Now, twenty years on, having fulfilled the obligations of a good education, she seems bent on making up the time.
The title of her first major release, Hard Wuk, reflects her approach to getting things done; being a model (she’s signed to Baltimore based agency Model Concepts), pursuing her second degree, running her own business in events, and making waves as an upcoming soca star definitely takes hard wuk. But when it comes to throwing a party, Sookermany believes the work is best shared, as the lyrics of her next release, Take Control, contend. “Basically it’s about me wanting a guy to do the work, rather than the usual, where a woman does all the work in a party,” she explains. You can also listen out for My Baby, which will come out in a few weeks. “I am the kind of woman who prefers to enjoy carnival and mas with my significant other, so the song is about that.”
Beverley’s music is currently available on Trinidad Tunes and will soon be available on iTunes.
