His relationship with music is like a marriage, one that he has remained faithful and committed to for a decade, come November 4, 2011. For many, ten years may seem like a long time to commit to anything, but DJ Stephen has been enjoying every minute of the journey he has chosen.
Born Stephen Phillip, in Carenage, Trinidad, the 26 year old has been extensively promoting soca music and other Caribbean genres throughout the world; his repertoire also includes sounds such as disco, funky house, hip hop and pop. Atlanta-based Phillip can boast of his most recent travels to places like Amsterdam, Belgium, Germany and throughout England and the USA, sharing his unique skills and persona everywhere he goes. The ace DJ, in a brief interview, explained his relationship with music by saying, “It is what some would refer to as a love story; music soothes, it assists, eases pain and invokes emotion you never knew existed.” He went on to add that, “The fact that I can go to an event and add value to the atmosphere and the vibes that may already be there, or may be lacking, is a great achievement in itself.”
When describing the DJ, many refer to him as humble, modest, extremely energetic and overly talented; as much as this may sound a contradiction, it is an accurate description of who he is. For the third consecutive year, Stephen has been nominated as the International DJ of the Year at the International Soca Awards, an accolade which he won in both 2009 and 2010 (www.socaawards.com). Stephen is confident about capturing the title again this year, saying, “Capturing this title means that people know, appreciate and support who I am and what I have been doing for all these years.” He continued, “It means that my career is not only self fulfilling, but plays a role in the lives of others.” His successes also includes Best DJ on the Road at the Houston Caribfest in ’03, ’04 and ’06, as well as Atlanta’s Soca DJ Rama winner from ‘03 to ’05.
